What is a Ro-Ro ship? What are the Ro-Ro shipping companies in the world?

Ro-Ro ship is a transport ship that uses a tractor to pull a semi-trailer or a wheeled pallet containing box cargo or other pieces of cargo directly in and out of the cargo hold for loading and discharging. It is also called open-up and open-down ship, roll-on and roll-off ship. Cargo loading and discharging is not from the deck of the cargo hatch vertical lifting in and out, but through the opening of the ship's head, tail or both sides and hitched to the terminal on the springboard, with a trailer or fork loading and discharging car to the container or cargo with the chassis with wheels, from the cabin to the terminal.

The Ro-Ro ship has multiple decks to facilitate the placement of cargo units. The upper deck is flat and the decks are connected to each other with ramps or lifting platforms for vehicle passage. The superstructure is arranged at the bow or stern to facilitate cargo placement. The engine room is laid out at the stern and the chimney is placed on both sides. The entrance and exit of the ro-ro ship are usually set at the stern, with articulated diving board and shore lap, for ro-ro cargo to get on and off the ship.

MAFI lashing and loading specification

1. The distance from the front of the cargo to the front of MAFI is 5 meters, as shown in the figure above.

2. Placement of the appropriate padding under the goods, preferably rubber skin (if wooden padding, it must be fumigated) to prevent the goods from slipping on MAFI.

3. The goods must be placed on the horizontal centerline of the MAFI, with the extra wide part kept in line on both sides.

Notes on cargo entry into the port:

a.     Please make sure to add enough fuel to all export vehicles (at least 1/4 of the fuel tank for each vehicle) to ensure smooth loading and discharging in transit, if no fuel occurs during the loading and discharging of vehicles, the terminal will be unified for vehicle refueling, the service is a paid service.

b.    All export vehicles (including spare parts) must be marked with the following information: make, model, vehicle identification number, port of loading, port of discharge/final destination, size, weight, etc. (see attached). In order to prevent problems during the transfer process, please make sure that the export symbol is affixed.

c.     Considering the technical failure that may occur during the loading process, it is necessary to ask your company to arrange the relevant technical service personnel of the nearest service station to assist at the terminal when loading.

d.    To prevent damage to the vehicle during the sea journey, no spare parts are allowed to be stored in the commodity vehicle (except for the normal tools accompanying the vehicle, but they must be secured in the vehicle). All spare parts must be packed and stored in wooden boxes and must contain the export symbol on them.

e.     Please make sure that the inside and outside of the entering vehicle is clean.

The RO-RO ship is characterized by high loading and discharging efficiency, fast ship turnover and convenient direct intermodal transportation by land and water.

The main advantages of RO-RO ship are: no starting equipment is needed, and the cargo can be hauled directly to the receiving place without reloading at the port, shortening the time of cargo turnover and reducing cargo damage.
